A portfolio is a required and critically important component of the application. All B.Arch. applicants must submit their portfolio online via Cornell AAP SlideRoom. The portfolio should contain several examples of freehand drawings including sketches as well as fully developed work. In addition to drawing, a range of artistic media needs to be demonstrated, but each applicant should emphasize the work where their skills and passion are expressed most strongly. Painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, video, woodworking and other crafts can convey artistic experience and aptitude.
Please submit 15-20 slides with no more than two dedicated to the same project. Images must be clear with no text on the page, unless it is integral to the artwork. A carefully crafted caption for each slide should state the intent, elaborate on the process and method, and reflect on the outcome. Include a note that lists the size and medium of each piece, as well as whether the work was completed in class or independently. Any group projects should be credited accordingly and the task performed by the applicant noted specifically.
The deadlines for portfolio submissions are:
November 1 (early decision first-year applicants)
January 2 (regular decision first-year applicants)
October 1 (spring transfer applicants)
March 1 (fall transfer applicants)
Portfolios are added to the applicant's admissions file for review by the architecture department admissions committee. An application is not considered complete until all requirements have been received, including the online portfolio and the interview evaluation.

A design portfolio is required for all applicants to the School of Architecture. The portfolio should demonstrate creative aptitude and potential and is not expected to be architectural in focus. It can include images of work done in a variety of media, including freehand drawings/sketches, paintings, sculpture, photography/film, printmaking, graphic design, ceramics, theater design, installations, fashion design, etc. The work may have been produced as part of a formal course or independently. With the exception of work completed at college architecture discovery programs, the inclusion of drafting or CAD drawings is discouraged. In that regard, art courses are typically better preparation for architecture at Rice than drafting/architecture courses.
Requirements

-Page size should be horizontally oriented A4 or Letter (8.5”x11”); images should be between 150dpi and 300dpi
-The first page should be a cover/title page with the applicant’s name
-Content can be up to 10 pages (not including the title page); more than one image or work can be included per page
-Captions of images with title, year of execution, media, and size are encouraged. A one to two sentence description is also acceptable
-Our advice: Keep the design of the portfolio itself, and of the pages, simple; let your work speak for itself.

You will upload your portfolio in SlideRoom through the Common Application.
Your portfolio should present 12–20 examples of your most recent work that showcases your thinking and making. The work should reflect a full range of your ideas, interests, experiences and abilities in the arts. This can include work in any medium, in finished or sketch form, and can be the result of an assigned project or a self-directed exploration.
We recommend that you include some developmental research and/or preparatory work for one of your submissions. It is helpful to show your process of thinking and investigation so we can see how you develop your ideas. A sketchbook or journal page may be an appropriate way to share your process. Consider also including the finished piece and preparatory work(s) in a single image. There is an area in SlideRoom where you can include brief text descriptions for your submissions.
We strongly discourage the submission of works in PDF format that include multiple pages, especially when there are numerous elements on a single page. These are difficult for reviewers to view and assess and are likely to exceed the allowed limit of 20 work examples.

First-Year (Freshman) Applicants
We are interested in seeing evidence of your creativity and curiosity. Work selected for inclusion should demonstrate the breadth and diversity of your creative interests and need not be limited to architectural work (if included at all). Drawing, sketching, painting, graphic design, photography, video, web-design, sculpture, ceramics, fashion design and furniture design are just some examples of the types of work that may be included. Work may be produced for school courses, extracurricular activities or independently. Do not include technical drafting unless you designed the content of the drawing. Your portfolio should be limited to your strongest work. Avoid too many pictures of the same piece. If the work was part of a group effort, please indicate your specific contribution. As you upload an image of work, you will be prompted to add descriptions to each piece.
Transfer Applicants
Transfer students have the opportunity to be considered for the USC School of Architecture at one of three levels; First Year, Summer Transfer Studio or Second Year of the Bachelor of Architecture program. On an individual basis, students are carefully evaluated by members of the School’s admissions committee for academic and creative accomplishments at their previous institutions, how the experience of their previous course of study has prepared them for our program as well as future promise at USC and the School of Architecture.
Students considered for transfer admission to the first year program have a high level of academic accomplishment and demonstrate a level of general exposure to issues of design and architecture but have not yet achieved the comprehensive breadth of foundational skills presented in the School of Architecture first year program. These basic skills range from design fundamentals of 2D and 3D composition, conceptual problem solving, research and analysis of historical precedent, principles of spatial order, free hand drawing, computer drafting and 3D modeling. Though a student’s portfolio may communicate a high level of skill on certain issues, the full range of the year-long experience our first year offers may be missing.
Students considered for transfer admission to the Summer Transfer Studio have a generally high level of previous academic and creative accomplishment and experience. However, these students require an accelerated review of the fundamental principles described above to fill any gaps in their knowledge presented by their portfolio and transcript review. The Summer Transfer Studio is an accelerated and comprehensive course and requires students have the ability to excel rapidly and at a high level through all of the design issues presented by the projects. This Summer Transfer Studio must be completed with grades of B’s or better in order to accelerate to the second year in the fall.
Students considered for admission directly to second year have a demonstrated high level of academic accomplishment and creative experience from their previous program(s) of study. The projects presented in the portfolio represent an advanced level of design analysis, creative problem solving and a range of visualization skills, all required as part of comprehensive awareness and understanding of the fundamental principles presented in first year.
Format
The portfolio submission should consist of a minimum of 6 and up to 12 digital image files uploaded online by December 1, 2018 if applying for First-Year Scholarship Consideration, January 15, 2019 for Regular First-Year Consideration or February 1, 2019 for Transfer Consideration. Up to one video file may be included in your submission. Other electronic formats, or CD/DVD submissions will not be accepted. Please do not send original or bound materials. Please do not send more than one online submission.

Note that applicants to the architecture program whose high school GPA is a 3.7 or higher are not required to submit a portfolio; portfolios automatically will be waived for students with a weighted or unweighted GPA of 3.7 or numerical grade of 90. Visual Portfolio: The visual portfolio should consist of 12-20 pieces of your best work. It should consist of a variety of media and approaches. It can include assignment-based projects, self-directed work or pieces of a collaborative nature. The portfolio does not need to be major-specific and can include any type of work including paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, etc. In addition, students must submit three to five observational drawings. Examples of observational work include landscape, still-life, self-portrait, figure drawings, and interior spaces. Please do not include work that copies photographs, uses the grid system or directly replicates any other artist's work (including replicating anime drawings, cartoons, or video game character designs).
