From the very beginning of design at the end of 2015, it took four and a half years for Næra Hotel Xitang to open to business in late August 2019. A tranquil place far from noise and crowds, drawing inspiration from the basic characteristics of Xitang’s local architectural culture, Næra Hotel is infused with contemporary art, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, music, poetry and performance art, and adopts the organic culinary culture created by the original eco-friendly villages in local area, with the aim of rebuilding a new image for modern resort hotels.

酒店位于西塘东区的核心区,西邻西塘古镇,东临贞不雅观路,总建筑面积4万平米(个中地下2万平米),建筑环绕约4千平米的水庭院-纳良庭支配着164间客房、接待、泳池、SPA、茶肆、书吧、酒吧、国际会议中央(宴会大厅)、整日餐、日料餐厅。

Næra Hotel, occupying a total floor area of 40,000 square meters (with an underground area of 20,000 m2 ), is situated at the core area of the east district of Xitang, with Xitang Ancient Town to its west and Zhenguan Road to the east. It embraces 4,000-sqaura-meter Water Courtyard – Summer Courtyard, where 164 guest rooms, the reception area, the swimming pool, the SPA, the tea room, the reading room, the bar, the international conference center (banquet hall), the all-day dining restaurant, and the Japanese restaurant are available.

西塘传统建筑的基本元素是灰瓦白墙、青砖、木。古镇河道密布,街道狭窄。人流高峰期,游客被游客推着往前走,很少有可安静休憩的空间。设计起初,我们的目标是为游客供应一个与古镇互补的空间状态,古镇是闹的,良壤酒店是静的。在古镇里逛累了的客人能在酒店能停下来,静下来。
The traditional architecture in Xitang features such basic elements as grey tiles, white walls, blue bricks and wooden structures. The town is noted for its sophisticated network of riverways and narrow streets. During peak hours, tourists are too crowded to move smoothly and could hardly find a place to have a rest. Thus, our design starts out to fulfill a purpose, that is, to provide a space make it up in the ancient town. The hotel is a land of silence and peace located in a noisy and bustling town. Tourists who feel tired after touring around the town would be able to stop for a rest in the hotel.

只管建筑的风格要沿袭西塘古镇的风格是硬性哀求,但是我们不肯望地域性只是个建筑符号的表达,而是用传统材料的演绎当代空间,用江南建筑中常见的材料以院落和庭院的办法建筑当代空间,在空间中引入光,让空间具有韶光和历史的维度,即传统又当代。
Although it is mandatory that the hotel’s architectural style should inherit that of Xitang Ancient Town, we do not want the local elements to be mere formality. Instead, we intend to use traditional materials to embody a modern space. We embedded courtyards and gardens built by traditional materials in regional architecture in South China to it, and let the light in, thus infusing a timely and historical perspective to the traditional yet modern space.

古镇中,街道是游客游走的空间,是带状的,是河道与建筑的边界空间,是繁盛热闹繁荣的;在良壤酒店的一层,有溜达空间,是环状的,是水庭院与酒店建筑的边界空间,是宁静的,鸟语,水声,客人可游、可不雅观、可望,悠然清闲。
The busy streets of the ancient town form the network of belts, which serve as the boundary between the riverways and buildings. In contrast, the ground floor of Næra Hotel where tourists can take a walk is ring-shaped space, which divides the water courtyard and hotel building. It is a tranquil place filled with the songs of birds and water, where tourists can have a walk, appreciate the landscape or enjoy sightseeing in a relaxed atmosphere.

环绕着水庭院,分别支配景不雅观亭、图书馆、茶肆、花房、酒吧,犹如传统园林的亭、台、楼、榭,因此建筑的室内与室外的边界被冲破,相互渗透,互为依存;建筑、人、水、树的物理特性的边界也被冲破,互为景不雅观,所望之处皆为景;同时传统与当代的边界被冲破,留白的墙、灰色的瓦、玄色的木条,来自历史,“活”在当代;就连水庭院本身的历史属性和文化方位也被冲破,既是东方的又是西方的,既是传统的,也是当代的。

A sight-seeing pavilion, library, tea room, flower room and bar are well arranged around the water courtyard in a similar way as how pavilions, corridors, mansions and terraces are erected in a traditional Chinese garden. The water courtyard breaks the boundary between the indoor and outdoor, allowing the two spaces to penetrate into each other and become interdependent. The physical boundaries among the architecture, people, water and trees also disappear, forming a whole landscape. Tradition and modernity become united, with the white walls, grey tiles and black wood stripes from history living in a modern architecture. Even the historical characteristic and cultural position of the water courtyard is no longer restricted to being the traditional and oriental. Instead, it takes on the western and modern style.

行走个中,面前的景犹如一幅长卷缓缓展开,让客人仿佛游走在画中。空间中那些精心支配的当代艺术品实际上也冲破了建筑功能属性的边界,既是酒店功能又是艺术品展示空间,既是文化地标又扎根于传统生态村落庄,这是良壤酒店自身布局的计策。
Walking in the space, the tourists would feel like strolling in a painting, with layers and layers of landscapes unfolded before their eyes. The artworks decorating the space serve both the functional and aesthetic purposes, which echoes with the design concept of Næra Hotel – a cultural landmark taking root in the traditional eco-friendly Chinese town.

良壤酒店的设计过程中有政府对风格的硬性哀求,有用地太小和方案高度的限定。政府对风格的限定迫使我们思考地域性与当代性问题;用地大小的限定导致在造型上没有可发挥的余地,迫使我们思考如何做不以造型媚谄人的建筑。在设计的过程中得到了业主朱总和西总夫妇、室内设计师琚宾老师、景不雅观庄镇光老师的支持和帮助,让我在全体设计过程中不断学习和发展,冲破了很多过去认知的边界,在此我特殊向他们表达衷心的感谢!
We have to take into account the mandatory requirements of local government in our design, i.e. land size and planned height. The restrictions on architectural style imposed by the government prompted us to re-consider the local elements and modern concepts while the limited land leaves little room for us to pursue innovation in the architectural appearance, thus forcing us to create a building that does not impress people with its pleasant appearance. During our design, we received the support and help from the proprietor Mr. and Mrs. Zhu, interior designer Ju Bing and the landscape designer Mr. Zhuang Zhenguang. I have learned and benefited much from their generosity and went beyond the boundaries that limited my conception of architectural design. Here I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to them.
